A continental climate with a warm summer and a dry winter is closely associated with areas in East Asia which are subject to both the monsoon (in summer), and the Siberian high-pressure weather system (in winter).
It is labelled ‘Dwb’ by the Köppen–Geiger scheme for the classification of climates, which requires:
- all months of the year to have an average temperature less than 22 °C
- at least four months of the year to have an average temperature of 10 °C or above
- the coldest month of the year to have an average temperature below -3 °C
- annual precipitation to exceed the annual potential evapotranspiration
- the wettest month of summer to have at least 10 times more precipitation than the driest month of winter.
