A desert climate, with a cold winter, is often formed in the rain shadow of a mountain range.
Examples include the Atacama and Patagonian deserts (formed by the Andes), the Karakum and Kyzylkum deserts (formed by the Caucasus, Hindu Kush, and Pamirs), and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts (formed by the Himalayas).
It is labelled ‘BWk’ by the Köppen–Geiger scheme for the classification of climates, which requires:
- average temperature to be less than 18 °C
- annual precipitation to be less than 50% of the annual potential evapotranspiration.
